Domestic poultry production can meet the internal demand of the country and reduce poultry imports dependence to zero in future, as Gennady Onishchenko the Chief Sanitary Veterinarian of the Russian Federation considers.

“After introduction of restrictions for use of poultry, in the production process of which chlorine-containing solutions were used, the rumor on oncoming famine started spreading at the suggestion of importers”, - Onishchenko said to RIA Novosti.

According to Onishchenko, the data of Rosstat and Rosptitsesoyuz speaks for gradual decrease of imports dependence from chicken meat and increase of domestic production. Thus, if in 1997 poultry imports totaled to 64.5% of total volume of consumed products, in 2002 this rate was 52%, and pursuant the results of 2008 it is expected to amount to 36%.

“In 2008 domestic poultry production is to total to 2.2 million tons. Thereat, the domestic production share will amount to more than 64%, and per capita meat consumption will increase up to 23.2 kilograms”, - Onishchenko reported.

He pointed out that from 2009 till 2012 it was planning to increase poultry production step by step up to 3.3 million tons in the Russian Federation. Per capita consumption will grow up to 27.6 kilograms respectively, and the imports share will total to only 8% by 2012.
